Fat grafting is a safe and effective procedure used to modify and contour the face and body. Precision Aesthetics is skilled in this area, which involves removing fat from one part of the body (fat harvesting) and injecting it into another part of the body. It is used for reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and offers regenerative, restorative and rejuvenating effects.
Call us to arrange a private consultation where we can discuss the benefits of fat grafting for you, including the following options:
The fat grafting process involves three steps:
In the first step, liposuction removes fat from a donor area. This is best done by manual methods using thin liposuction cannulas with small holes. Laser or ultrasonic liposuction is not to be used as it may damage the fat cells.
The fat is then processed with centrifugation and decanting to separate the viable adipose fat cells from debris, excess fluid, and dead cells. Another way is to wash the fat with a sterile saline solution. The discarded fat contains fat cells, which will likely not survive in the graft, which may create problems for the good cells.
The final step involves fat reinjection in tiny droplets throughout the subcutaneous tissue of the recipient area. This is to ensure a good blood supply to every fat droplet so that the fat graft has the best chance to survive.
The amount of fat reinjected is measured in mls or cc’s and ultimately changes depending on the specific patient case and the body area where the processed fat is injected.
Typical areas of fat grafting include:
Someone needs to drive you home after the procedure. You can start driving again when you can do so without experiencing any discomfort.
The treated areas will probably be bruised and swollen for a few weeks, and you will be given a special garment to reduce swelling. Vigorous exercise or strenuous exertion such as lifting or straining must be avoided for a minimum of 3 weeks after surgery. Take it easy. Do not massage, rub or place any tension on the incisions for a minimum of 4 weeks after your surgery.
It can take up to 6 to eight months for a surgical fat transfer to settle fully, as some of the injected fat may be reabsorbed by your body during the first few months after the operation.
After fat transfer, you can expect that after about six to eight months, the fat cells remaining should be viable and last a lifetime. It is important to remember that you will continue to age over time, and you may need additional treatments to continue looking youthful.
Answer: Fat cannot move
Fat cells cannot move from one area to another. If fat cells survive after being injected, it is only because they have become attached to their new blood supply, which keeps them alive. They are unable to detach, move to a new location, and then reattach.
Fat transfer may suit you if you are looking for moderate results. However, suppose you’re thinking about enlarging your breasts more than half a cup size. In that case, implants are better, giving a more predictable result. Also, how much fat you have available to use from other parts of your body limits how much you can graft.
It is not advised to deep massage for at least the first two months or more after surgery. The transplanted fat usually has blood vessels growing into it by two weeks. Still, deep massage can disturb the new vessels in the grafted fat. Touching the skin gently for washing and applying lotions is not a problem.
At Precision Aesthetics in Johannesburg, we use the VECTRA® 3-D imaging system during consultations to provide our patients with what we believe is the most complete education possible regarding their cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. It also helps to demonstrate to them the results they can expect.
