Some women struggle with the appearance of their genitalia, especially after childbirth, when the skin around the labia can become stretched and uncomfortable. Long and unequal folds around the vagina can also cause inflammation, urinary obstruction, compromised hygiene, sexual dissatisfaction, embarrassment and loss of sexual confidence. A labiaplasty treats the labia, the inner ‘lips’ of the vagina, without harming the inner vagina or clitoral area.
At the consultation, an in-depth conversation is held regarding your specific requirements for a labiaplasty procedure. All risks and complications are discussed in detail.
The operation is performed as a day case and can take up to 90 minutes to complete. There may be a simple excision of excess skin with skin opposition and closure. Sometimes, a wedge excision may be needed to obtain the best result.
Patients are advised to abstain from strenuous activity for 10-14 days. Swelling may take up to 2 weeks to subside, and there may be slight bleeding for the first few days, so personal hygiene is essential. Residual sutures can be removed at 2 weeks, and intimate relations can resume at 6 weeks.
Labiaplasty results in a shorter labia minora that does not hang down below the hair-bearing labia majora level. Most patients who experienced discomfort from twisting and tugging of their labia generally find relief after surgery. According to many studies, labiaplasty surgery is associated with a high rate of satisfaction of over 90 per cent.
Labiaplasty reduces excess skin of the inner (Labia Miniora) vaginal lips, leaving them flush with the outer Labia Majora.
The procedure can take up to one and a half hours to perform under Local and sedation. It may involve either simple removal of excess protruding tissue and an oversew of the lips or the additional reduction of the clitoral hood. In some instances, a wedge excision may be performed to reduce scarring.
Patients are on their feet within 12 to 24 hours with minor discomfort as patients are discharged on analgesia. Dissolving sutures can be removed at 2 weeks if they have not dissolved completely. Sexual relations can be resumed 6 weeks after surgery.
This procedure is performed under sedation and local anaesthetic. So, although you may be awake, you may not remember that well, as all sedation may have an amnesic effect.
All surgery has some element of risk. Dr Ching will explain the specific risks of this surgery, including bruising and infections. There is minimal risk of loss of sexual sensation as there is no surgery involving the nerve supply to the vagina or clitoris.
A suitable candidate is a patient who is in good physical and mental health, is unhappy with their labial appearance, or experiences discomfort with exercise or intercourse.
At Precision Aesthetics in Johannesburg, we use the VECTRA® 3-D imaging system during consultations to provide our patients with what we believe is the most complete education possible regarding their cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. It also helps to demonstrate to them the results they can expect.
