Botulinum toxin, referred to as “Botox” by patients, is an injectable that temporarily reduces or removes wrinkles and fine facial lines. The most often treated areas are frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet near the eyes. Other areas have also been treated, such as thick bands in the neck, thick jaw muscles, lip lines and gummy smiles.
Botulinum toxin injections should only be performed by experienced healthcare professionals.
A very thin needle injects small amounts of botulinum toxin into specific muscles. Dr Ching preserves your natural facial expressions by carefully choosing specific wrinkle-producing muscle groups to weaken.
Botulinum toxin treatment injections generally take 20 minutes to perform.
The extent of your wrinkles will determine how many injection sites are needed: crow’s feet, for example, require two to three injections, and furrows above your brow could take five or more injections.
You may start normal activities the same day.
Don’t massage the treated areas after the wrinkle treatment because it can cause the botulinum toxin to spread to another facial area which may cause facial weakness or drooping.
Injections of Botulinum toxin (derived from bacteria) block the nerve signal to targeted muscles. The muscle is then unable to contract. The end result is reduced facial movement and wrinkles. Common types of botulinum toxin type A include Botox® and Dysport.
Botulinum toxin can be used to:
The FDA has approved Botox® for frown lines and crow’s feet, while Dysport® is approved for frown lines only. All other uses are considered “off label.”
Results are seen within 3-4 days, but sometimes up to a week to see the full effect. This improvement typically lasts up to four months. When the results of botulinum toxin begin to fade, movement and wrinkles will return.
Botulinum toxin is used to treat excessive sweating, eye disorders such as crossed eyes (strabismus) and uncontrolled blinking (blepharospasm), to treat movement disorders (such as cervical dystonia and torticollis), and to reduce the cosmetic appearance of wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin is used to paralyse specific facial muscles to prevent excessive muscle movement that causes dynamic facial lines and the appearance of particular emotions on the face, such as anger, fatigue and ageing.
Botulinum toxin treats dynamic lines and wrinkles, where repetitive muscle movement causes crow’s feet and frown lines. These begin to fade after Botulinum toxin. Dermal fillers work best for static (non-muscular) wrinkles.
