Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’ and occurs when men develop excess fat and tissue in the chest area. This can occur due to hormonal imbalances or as a result of steroid or drug use. This embarrassing problem can cause extreme distress and loss of self-image. Precision Aesthetics helps men deal with this issue through safe and effective surgery.

Common causes of gynecomastia in men that seek medical assessment include:

  • Pubescent gynecomastia that does not resolve – 25 per cent
  • Drugs – 10 to 25 per cent
  • Unknown reasons – 25 per cent

Gynecomastia often causes emotional discomfort and affects one’s self-confidence. Men may even avoid exercise and intimacy to hide their condition. It is characterized by the presence of unilateral (one breast) or bilateral (both breasts) excess localized fat, glandular tissue development and excess breast skin.

In severe cases, the excess breast tissue weight may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. In these cases, the areola size and position can be surgically adjusted, and excess skin may be reduced. Surgery decreases breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.
