Gynaecomastia is commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’ and occurs when men develop excess fat and tissue in the chest area. This can occur due to hormonal imbalances or as a result of steroid or drug use. This embarrassing problem can cause extreme distress and loss of self-image. Precision Aesthetics helps men deal with this issue through safe and effective surgery.
Common causes of gynecomastia in men that seek medical assessment include:
Gynecomastia often causes emotional discomfort and affects one’s self-confidence. Men may even avoid exercise and intimacy to hide their condition. It is characterized by the presence of unilateral (one breast) or bilateral (both breasts) excess localized fat, glandular tissue development and excess breast skin.
In severe cases, the excess breast tissue weight may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. In these cases, the areola size and position can be surgically adjusted, and excess skin may be reduced. Surgery decreases breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.
For this surgery, men must be healthy, of average weight and have realistic expectations. They must be bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too large and whose condition cannot be corrected through medical treatments. Teenagers may benefit from surgery, although secondary procedures may be needed in the future. In cases where gynecomastia is mainly the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone can be used to remove this extra fat.
At Precision Aesthetics, in most cases, BodyTite Liposuction is combined with SAFE Liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue and, at the same time, tighten skin.
This then avoids the need to remove excess skin. Sometimes gynecomastia is treated by both Liposuction and excision. Any sub-aereolar breast tissue present can be excised through an inferior hemi-periaereolar incision, leaving an excellent scar hidden at the skin aereolar interface.
More extensive excision techniques are recommended when glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision is also necessary if the areola needs to be decreased in size or if the nipple needs to be moved to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the extent to which tissue needs to be excised.
During the gynecomastia surgery recovery period, an elastic support garment will be used to decrease swelling and support the new chest shape.
A drain may be placed temporarily under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. Patients are discharged on medication following the surgery and told to return for assessment and a dressing change the following week. Regular activities are resumed at 6- 8 weeks, but gentle exercise can start at 2-3 weeks depending on if Liposuction alone was used or if surgery was required.
The final results of gynecomastia surgery are lasting in many cases. However, suppose gynecomastia resulted from using specific prescription medications, drugs (including steroids) or weight gain. In those cases, one must be entirely free from these substances and remain at a stable weight to maintain results.
Gynecomastia surgery results are immediately visible, although the final results of your gynecomastia surgery may take 3-6 months to be seen. Over time, swelling will subside, and scarring, although permanent, will fade. With your new image, satisfaction should continue to grow as you recover from surgery.
Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will need incisions. While most incisions are hidden within natural contours, some may be visible and are necessary for male breast reduction surgery.
All gynecomastia surgery scars are permanent, even though some scars may be concealed in the breast’s natural contours. Your improved upper body will likely enhance your self-image and confidence, whether in a shirt and tie, a t-shirt, or baring your chest at the beach.
The practice of surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected from your operation, there are no guarantees. In some situations, achieving optimal results with a single surgical procedure to treat gynecomastia may not be possible. Another surgery may be necessary to perform additional tightening or repositioning of the breasts or to treat any complications.
Breast reduction is ideal for those with gynecomastia; these characteristics make the ideal gynaecomastia candidates:
The decision to have plastic surgery is highly personal, and patients must decide if the benefits will achieve their goals. They also need to know if gynecomastia surgery’s risks and potential complications are acceptable.
Gynecomastia surgery risks include:
At Precision Aesthetics, treatments for gynecomastia include Liposuction, BodyTite® to tighten the skin and surgical removal of breast tissue if present.
BodyTite® is a minimally-invasive advanced body contouring and refinement procedure that allows patients to tighten skin and achieve surgical-like results with no scars or sagging, less downtime and long-lasting, beautiful results that improve with time.
Dr Ching uses BodyTite® skin tightening to enhance the results of gynecomastia surgery patients. This can be used with gynecomastia gland removal, gynecomastia liposuction or both.
Benefits of Using BodyTite®:
BodyTite® is more effective than other non-surgical procedures as it applies radiofrequency energy under the skin (rather than on the skin surface) to directly stimulate the fibroblast cells that produce new collagen. This reduces the bruising, swelling and recovery time. Then there is the added advantage that the RF energy also assists in melting fat.
The most innovative part of the BodyTite® technology, however, is the ability to achieve up to 50% skin tightening (compared to traditional Liposuction), which significantly enhances the appearance of the final result and is particularly beneficial for gynecomastia patients, as well as patients over 40 and with more significant deposits of fat.
With recent advances in Plastic Surgery techniques and technology, most gynecomastia surgeries can now be performed on an outpatient basis. This entails anaesthesia with local sedation or a general anaesthetic. The procedure may take from 1-to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery
At Precision Aesthetics in Johannesburg, we use the VECTRA® 3-D imaging system during consultations to provide our patients with what we believe is the most complete education possible regarding their cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. It also helps to demonstrate to them the results they can expect.
